I just got home from Nylon Summer Music Tour 2009. It was a total awesomeness!!! I came up late so I didn't have the chance to see Jaguar Love⎯which has left me with no idea of what their performance looked like. So the next in line was Plastiscines, yes plasticines with an S between the I and C, so yeah whatever... first things first. Plastiscines is an-all-girl band from Paris (they are Katty, Marine, Louise and Anaïs) with a complete package of bébés rockers; they dress up in le bobo style (bourgeois bohème), have an upbeat music driven by the guitars and drum and all-in-all⎯catchy lyrics. Parfait, as the Frenchmen said. And on the following, the Living Things finally rocked the venue. It was remarkable, enough said. On top of those, the one that we've been waiting for... Patrick Wolf was finally show up. Me and my friend Alina were screaming like crazy. He wore like a coat with a big grayish Union Jack graphic on it⎯it's simply soooo Patrick⎯flamboyant, diva and primadona. I must say that I was totally wrong, his live performance is waaaaaaay better than his music video. It was epic. I was driven away, I danced like crazy like as if I got sugar rush or something. It was an amazing night and we didn't want that night to be at an earlier end. So after the first goodbye we, the audience, were screaming and stomping for him⎯begging for an encore. Finally after 5 minutes or so he showed up again for the second time. It was a one fine night.

I was hooked up as I was listening to Lissy Trullie that somehow it reminds me a bit about my ever favorite, The Velvet Underground. The band consists Lissy Trullie as the lead vocalist and guitar player, Harley Viera-Newton as the bassist, Eben D'Amico as the guitarist and Josh Elrod as the drummer. Truly say, I was enraptured by Lissy's boyish voice as it was grasping through my ears. Their music is a perfect blend of vintage dancey-wave that was common in 60's era with modern affair. Likewise I was caught by Lissy's allure; her remarkable androgyny style as she swaggers away with her boyish attitude. Mingling it together simply puts her on my influence lists.

You got to watch this kick-ass video. What can I say more, her voice is just amazing!

Okay... okay... so firstly pause the stereo before you play this video because it's kind of a bit distracting...

The video was made by Jamie and VV themselves by using SUPER 8mm CAMERA! Daaang! It was like soooooooooo cool!!! They shot this video whilst they were touring with The Raconteurs. So, you might spot Jack White in the video, he was playing hand-tossing game with Jamie, it was hilarious! Their good friend, Owen Oppenheimer edited it together for them in London. If you found this video quite a bit low quality and blurry, but then again considering about their minimum equipment to create this video, it's such a really big effort. For me, it created the stylishly grainy look.

P.S. I'm considering to dye my own hair with deep pure black color, since my natural hair is auburn-ish, in short it sucks! Also I want to let my bangs grow longer and longer until it covers my whole eyes. Like this one below, I know it sounds like a bit quirky but anyway... who cares! Aaaand I got the biker jacket that I have wanted all this time at H&M. What else could get any better?

She made them by hand, so don't be surprised if you find it quite a "bit" pricey, but I think it's quite reasonable. The scanned photographs were shaped in circles, and each triangles section were filled with ephemera and mementoes of these people: buttons, pressed flowers, bits of jewelry and lace, old letters, stamps, shells, vintage images, and even locks of hair! Remember Native Korean Rock and the Fishnets? They had performed their debut show at Union Pool in Williamsburg a month ago. Sorry for the lack of post, I forgot to post this down. Based on "another" Karen's project, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen’s edgy banshee vocals is starkly juxtaposed with their sweet tune. It was a thrilled amazement that I experienced as I watched them on YouTube. I love their sailor-y outfits and Karen O was (and always) amazing. Oh boy, how I wish I didn't miss their show and flied swiftly away to East Coast. The debut show was a big success, as obviously indicated by their sold-out-tickets for two nights in a row.

A Tribute to Nagi Noda (RIP)

It's such a deep shock for me, knowing that one of my favorite art director was already gone. Nagi Noda, 34-years-old art genius passed away after surgical complications from injuries sustained in a traffic accident the previous year. And shame on me, I just knew this devastating news just a while ago. I've been adoring her works from a year ago (from the first time that Scissor Sister - She's My Man video clip came out) and still... my breath always gasping whenever I see her artworks. Knowing that she has gone forever, my heart wrenched, gee! she was only 34 years old, God why don't just give her more time to create more wonderful works that everyone would love to love. Well, and I hope she may rest in peace...

I am very very tired today, I went to the Northgate Mall and University Village (again) in a row with Metro bus. No wonder, I get exhausted right now. I went there with my hostmate, Helen and she's from Shanghai and both of us go to the same college.

So, OK back to the topic... Fall is near and I still searching for yellow-sunshine opaque and purple-maroon opaque. We went to Macy's at Northgate Mall and also Target just across the street from the mall. But I still can't find the opaques with those colors everywhere. Blaaarrrghhh, bollocks! But I found a pair of good boots with special price also just in case for next Winter, well I didn't buy the boots actually, I'll save it for later. Afterall the boots are not the one that I was looking for, I was looking for the boots that similar to Oxford shoes, yeah something like that.

First thing first. I was trying to look for the opaques at H&M in U Village but I don't have much time since Helen and I have to buy food containers and laundry bags at Bartell, and we've promised Mrs. Querol (my host mistress) to get home around 7 PM. Maybe I'll check on it later at weekend.

And there it is... my shopping paradise, may I present you... H&M and their breathtaking Autumn 2008 collection. Since I already have coats. So I just bought a grey bag for only $19.99, mustard yellow beanie $9.99, turquoise knit handgloves, and waisted dark grey jeans $29.99. But still I want those coats for sure. Guess what, guess what?! Klaxons have let slip some news about their second album, as reported by BBC and NME on how the new songs are coming along and even got a quote or two from record producer James Ford (also known for being one half of Simian Mobile Disco). He said that this future album will be sticking to the "melodic" sound which won them the Mercury Prize but are taking it in a different direction.

Simon Taylor told BBC 6Music: “We’ve got back together to start writing and we are just kind of starting and it’s sounding really, really good and heavy and delirious and a bit all over the shop.”

Their second album isn’t due out until next year, so we’ll have to wait a bit before we hear anything more.

Rushing August

Gosh! Time flew so fast without realizing it, tomorrow will be the first day of August. In conclusion, I only got +/- 40 more days to spend here, in Jakarta. Until then I'll be leaving Indonesia, and heading forward to Seattle. Starting a new life as a college students *woohh cheesy* at North Seattle Community College. Majoring architecture.
For sure; I am going to miss my friends, terribly! I could hardly imagine I could enjoy my days there without their laughter.
After all, this is my last chance and learn how to be responsible for my own sake...

Yann Tiersen – musical genius as compared to Chopin, Erik Satie, Phillip Glass and Michael Nyman – scored the soundtrack. The trailler above contains Tiersen's, "La Valse d'Amélie".

Beautifully shot, shame on me I just watched it last night. If you are same as I was, you should grab fast this film. A very delicate film to watch.

Native Korean Rock & The Fishnets is Karen O’s latest ride through the tunnel of love. Written over the last couple of years, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' lead vocalist has collaborated with a gaggle of fellow mover and shakers from New York City to produce this love-song side-project. They had their first show last night in the city that never sleeps but you can sample the tracks over at their MySpace today.

This side solo project of hers is expected with high drama, and high stakes in two intimate performances, and did NOT have anything to do with Yeah Yeah Yeahs. As quote by Karen O, herself:

Today I went to (ak.'sa.ra) Kemang, at first I was looking for Goldfrapp's latest album; Seventh Tree. But it ended up, that I couldn't find it anywhere. So rather than went home with empty-handed. I bought Yoko Ono's album; Yes, I'm a Witch. I never listened to Ono before, but I knew she is an avant-garde musician. I was distracted by her song list on the back cover. There's plenty of favorite musicians of mine featured in Ono's album, such as Peaches, Le Tigre, Apples in Stereo, Cat Power, The Polyphonic Spree. After a little consideration and got called by my father for a few times because he needed the driver. So I bought it in a hurry, didn't have time to listen it first. On second thought; why not bought an album that featured my favorite musicians of all time in one pack?

I listened to it all the way home. It sound quirky and surreal at first, I was waiting for Peaches to sing on track 3 but her vocals didn't show up it was only Ono's, so I skipped to track 10 on the intro it sound typically Cat Power, but again only Ono's vocals. Curious, so I browsed on internet about it. I found out that all the artists that were featured in, only contribute to remix or cover a song from Ono's back catalogue. According to the press release, nearly every artist chose only the vocals, and created entirely new backing tracks to demonstrate the versatility of Ono's compositions.

Muse of the Moment (part #1)

Forget Gisele Bündchen, Heidi Klum, Agyness Deyn, Irina Lazareanu, Gemma Ward, yeah-you-name-it for a while. I'm bringing you back-to-back 1950's to 1970's style icon.

Nico (October 16, 1938 – July 18, 1988)
Christa Päffgen was a German singer, songwriter, fashion model, actress, keyboard player, and featured on Warhol superstars, best known by her pseudonym Nico.

As a musician, she is remembered for both her time in The Velvet Underground and her solo work.

For over twenty years, Nico was a heroin addict. She died because of a severe cerebral hemorrhage while on holiday with her son in Ibiza, Spain.

Nico has been an influence on many acts. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Patrick Wolf, Bauhaus, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, Morrissey, Björk, Coil, Jocelyn Pook, Fabienne Shine (who covered "All Tomorrow's Parties"), Dead Can Dance as well as numerous contemporary goth bands have all cited Nico as a major influence. Two of her songs, "The Fairest of the Seasons" and "These Days", both written by Jackson Browne and taken from Chelsea Girl, are featured in Wes Anderson's film The Royal Tenenbaums.

And one of my favorite singer, Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes has quoted Nico as an influence in particular Desertshore. During 2007 she would start concerts with "Le Petit Chevalier" from that record.

Edie Sedgwick (April 20, 1943 – November 16, 1971)

Edith Minturn "Edie" Sedgwick was an American actress, socialite, and heiress who starred in several of Andy Warhol's short films in the 1960's.

She died in early age, when she was 28 because of her addiction to alcohol and overdosed barbiturates.

But, she influenced many people as in music, movies, and fashion icon. The Velvet Underground song "Femme Fatale" (on the album The Velvet Underground and Nico) sung by Nico is an ode to Edie.

Sienna Miller played Sedgwick in Factory Girl, a fictionalized film about her life and times, released in December, 2006. The film portrays Warhol as a cynic who leads Edie to psychiatric problems and later death.

Jane Birkin (14 December 1946 – until now)

Jane Mallory Birkin is an English actress, singer and film director. She met Serge Gainsbourg while playing on the set for Slogan as her mentor, and married in 1968. They separated in 1980. Their daughter is actress and singer, Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Hermès named and designed a handbag - the Birkin bag - for her in 1984 after the actress was seen in 1981 by the head of Hermès struggling with several bags while boarding an aeroplane.

It looks like Kate Moss is dressing up in VV style.

P.S.: I don't care if her BF is Jamie, but dressing up like that doesn't make her "a-VV-make". Nice try, Kate!

The Kills

Currently I'm overplaying this quirky-duo garage punk band called The Kills. When I first listened to it, it seemed that there’s nothing special with their music. I was wrong, then. I fall for their heavily-distorted upper guitar-strings into the rhythmic bases for each track I’ve listened; they were amazing, frizzling fast into my ears.

The Kills consist of Alison "VV" Mosshart and Jamie "Hotel" Hince. These two have been making music for the past year and doing a lot of home recordings where they live in the UK as well. Mosshart was previously in Floridian punk rock band Discount, and Hince was in the British rock bands Scarfo and Blyth Power, the latter an anarcho-punk band. The duo first met when Mosshart heard Hince practicing in the hotel room above hers, and when the former groups disbanded they struck up a songwriting partnership. For months, the pair air mailed work tapes across the Atlantic; this proved to test the patience of both artists as it took days or weeks to get each others tapes. And it didn’t work. Frustrated, VV traded Florida sun for London rain in January, and found that her leap of faith paid off.

They began their career with Year Zero project. They renamed themselves as VV and Hotel respectively and began writing sparse, minimalist songs together with the aid of a drum machine.

For me, I always have thing for heroin chic looks. I think it's really sexy in mysterious way by anorexian looky, pale skin, dark circles underneath the eyes, and jutting bones (e.g. Kate Moss [eventhough I don't like to call her as an example] and Edie Sedgwick). When the first time I saw her. I was blown away by her onstage swagger and intensity that makes any other musician look like spinal tap. When it came to rock n' roll I realized that she's the real deal. She is my definition of cool. VV smoke ciggs and almost looks anorexia.

Hell yeah I love her cranky personal style!

And also she does this cover album for Placebo's recent album, Meds (2006).

Her collaboration with Placebo is featured in Meds.

Fyi: Brian Molko from Placebo has been friends with Jamie Hince for almost 17 years.
